Game Recap

GAME 1 -

CHATHAM - Chatham wins big in the season opener with an eight run fourth inning. In front of a relatively large opening day crowd, the A's downed the Harwich Mariners 8-3 at Veterans Field.

James Avery (Niagara) returning for his second season with the A's got the call against the tall southpaw, Zach Kroenke (Nebraska). While Kroenke retired nine out of the first 10 batters he faced, Avery through five consecutive balls to start the ballgame. While Avery escaped the first inning without any damage, in the top of the second, with one out, the outfielderfielder Brent Lillibridge hit a deep fly to left field that just cleared the fence and Harwich took a 1-0 lead. In the fourth, the right-handed Lillibridge homered again, this time to the opposite field, 325 feet to right. The very next batter Mike Pankratz, also hit a solo homerun and the Mariners led 3-0.

In the home half of the inning, with one out, Rob Jacobson finally broke through to pick up Chatham's first hit of the ballgame. His single was followed by three more base hits from Mura, Storrer and with the bases loaded, Brian Adamski bringing in the first A's run. A bases loaded walk to Jonny Defendis forced home a run. Ryan Bono came up with the bases loaded once again and Kroenke through a wild pitch allowing Storrer to score and the game was tied at 3. Bono then singled up the middle plating Adamski to give Chatham a lead it would never relinquish. The A's would bat around in the fourth scoring eight runs.

Shortstop Matt Camp was the defensive player of the game highlighted by a backhand play in the second inning, ranging to his right while charging and then firing to first, despite his momentum taking him towards third base. Camp recorded five other groundball assists.

Game Recap

GAME 2

CHATHAM - The A's are still undefeated in the young 2004 summer season. They improved to a 2-0 record with a bizarre 11-2 victory over the Yarmouth-Dennis Red Sox at Veterans Field.

Starter Andrew Miller worked out of early trouble to earn the win, striking out 12 batters over six innings of work. After trailing 2-0 after half an inning, the A's scored all the runs they would need in the home half of the first inning. They plated three runs without registering a hit, thanks to a series of 4 walks and 4 wild pitches.

Chatham's offense was aided all night by their opponents' ineffectiveness; benefiting from a host of walks, hit batters, and errors. The A's enjoyed a 2-run second inning, one run the sixth, and two more in the seventh. Ryan Bono extended the lead to 9 runs with a 2-RBI single in the bottom of the eighth inning.

On the other side of the scorecard, relief pitchers Parnell and Fenton breezed through the final three innings to secure the win. Tom Shanly made the defensive play of the game at third base when he snagged a line drive with two runners on and one out, and then doubled off the runner at first base to end the Y-D threat.

Game Recap

Game 3

HYANNIS- For any fans who may have fantasized about a 44-0 season for the A's, those dreams were dashed last night as Chatham fell in Hyannis 5-1.

The A's drew first blood in the top of the fourth inning when Tom Shanley was hit by a pitch, moved to third on a Jacobson single, and came home when Jacobson was caught in a rundown between first and second. The Hyannis Mets were caught off guard by the pseudo double steal and failed to register an out on the play.

The lead was short-lived however, as the Mets answered with two runs in the bottom half of the inning. Drew Locke and Mike Hernandez chalked up RBI basehits in the inning, plating the tying and go-ahead runs off of Chatham starter Gavin Fabian.

Meanwhile, Mets pitcher Matt Buschmann cruised along, allowing only 3 hits and one walk over eight innings of work. Further frustrating the A's, Mets leftfielder Mike Hernandez made a strong play in the outfield in the fifth inning, robbing Travis Storrer of extra bases with a running catch in the corner. Hyannis tacked on two runs in the fifth after loading the bases, and one more in the seventh to secure the win. The A's did not register a hit in their final three innings at bat.

Game 4

WAREHAM - The A's lost their second game in a row Sunday to West Division rival Wareham, 7-2. Chatham starter Bobby Paschal (Southern Cal) allowed three runs in the bottom of the first inning as the Gatemen started with an infield hit and two walks to load the bases. Tyler Bullock hit a sacrifice fly to center field and Zach Farcus and Kyle Reynolds followed with RBI singles. Paschal allowed only one hit over the next four innings.

Chatham's offense picked up 11 hits in the ballgame, all singles, but could build a rally except in the fifth inning. DH Jake Muyco led off with a basehit and Matt Camp followed with bunt single. After Tom Shanly sacrificed the runners to second and third, Travis Storrer smacked a high-hopper through the right side to score two and Chatham trailed by one.

Wareham responded with three insurance runs in the sixth inning, with the big blow coming from Chris Gutierrez plating Reynolds and Kevin Whelan. Reynolds doubled home the seventh Gateman run in the seventh inning, charged to Chatham reliever Chris Cody.

The A's were not without opportunities, however, as they stranded nine baserunners.

Game Recap

The A's won their first road contest of the season last night, rallying to defeat the Commodores 6-3 at Guv Fuller Field.

Falmouth jumped on the board first when Matt Antonelli drew a bases-loaded walk in the second inning. In the third, first baseman Mark Hamilton tagged a Robert Parnell pitch over the right-centerfield wall to make the score 2-0 Falmouth.

After five innings of ineffectiveness at the plate, the A's offensive struggles ended in the top of the sixth. With one out Travis Storrer singled, and then Ryan Bono hit a long homerun to right-center, tying the score at two. His long ball marked the first Chatham homerun of the 2004 season.

Falmouth, fighting for their first win of the summer, regained the lead in the home half of the seventh inning when Paul Christian smacked a basehit to centerfield, scoring Antonelli from second base.

Trailing late, the A's would show resilience over the final two innings. In the eighth, Tom Shanley was hit by a pitch and moved to third when a pickoff attempt went awry. Storrer followed with a walk.

After Ryan Bono fanned, Johnny Defendis hit an RBI groundout, tying the score. Jeff Grose then beat out an infield hit, sending Storrer to third. Looking for their first lead of the game, Chatham DH Zach Dillon launched an RBI double to left to score Storrer, but Grose was thrown out at home plate. Chatham led 4-3.

The A's secured their lead with two additional runs in the top of the ninth. Shanley drove in Chris Getz who had walked, and Matt Camp scored on a Storrer RBI groundout. In the bottom of the eighth and ninth innings, Kyle Bono, Ryan's twin brother, shut down the Commodores, striking out five on his way to the save.

Game Recap

Game 7: Chatham A's @ Brewster Whitecaps

BREWSTER- Chatham rallied for two runs in the top of the 10th inning to defeat the Whitecaps 3-1.

Chris Getz led off for the A's with a walk and eventually came around to score on a Ryan Bono RBI single. In the bottom of the inning, Brewster evened the score as James Boone came home on an RBI groundout after A's starter James Avery left the game when he twisted his ankle coming off the mound. The A's Chris Cody came in to replace Avery and proceeded to battle Brewster starter Adam Gold through almost 6 innings of scoreless baseball. Chatham also benefitted from a strong relief performance from Will Fenton.

The A's finally broke through in the 10th inning when Jeff Grose walked with one out, then moved to third on a hit-and-run single to right from Getz. Tom Shanley then smacked a ground ball to the Brewster first baseman, Andy Hunter, who threw the ball across the diamond to third baseman Ryan Roberson. Grose, caught between third and home, faked toward the bag, then broke toward the plate. Roberson threw home from a tough angle, and the ball skipped to the backstop, and the go-ahead run scored. Chatham tacked on an insurance run on a bases-loaded walk to Zach Dillon.

Fenton picked up the win, pitching a scoreless bottom of the 10th, during which he struck out 2 Whitecap hitters.

Game Recap

Game 8: Chatham A's @ Cotuit Kettleers

COTUIT- The Kettleers scored two runs in the final two innings of the game, beating the A's 2-1 at Lowell Park in front of nearly 900 fans.

Scoreless in the top of the fifth, A's second baseman Chris Getz hit a long double to left-center field and moved to third when centerfielder Justin Maxwell bobbled the ball in the outfield. After Zach Dillon was robbed of a hit, Johnny Defendis lifted a sac fly to left, scoring Getz.

Chatham starter Andrew Miller worked in and out of trouble, keeping Cotuit off of the scoreboard over his 7 innings of work. Tony Sipp also pitched masterfully for the Kettleers, allowing only the run in the fifth. Will Fenton came into the ballgame in the eighth to face Sipp who was inserted into the lineup as the DH. Sipp reached on an E-6, moved around to third, and scored the tying run on an RBI groundout from Dennis Diaz.

After a quiet top half of the inning, Justin Maxwell led off the bottom of the 9th with a double which hit off the very top of the left field wall. With one out, Cotuit's Chase Headley was intentionally walked in favor of catcher Nate Emrick. On a 2-2 pitch, Emrick hit a groundball through the middle, plating Maxwell who came home with the winning run.

Game Recap

Game 9 Summary

CHATHAM - For the second time this season, the A's were shut out at home as they fell to Bourne 2-0 at Veterans field. The loss was Chatham's second in a row.

Chatham starter Justin Cassell battled Mike Madsen through six innings of scoreless baseball until the Braves mounted a threat in the top of the seventh. Tim Mascia singled to lead off the inning, and after a strikeout, Greg Creek reached on an error charged to A's second baseman Chris Getz. With first and third with one out, the rain began to fall, and the game was delayed for approximately 15 minutes. After the delay, Kyle Padgett delivered an RBI single, giving the Braves the only run they would need. The second Bourne run came home on a wild pitch.

Meanwhile, the A's were stymied at the plate. In the fifth, they left two runners in scoring position with only one out, and in the eighth left runners on the corners with two men away. In the bottom of the ninth, Ryan Bono singled to lead off the inning and moved to second on a Zach Dillon single. With one out, Jeff Grose hit a chopper to third, advancing both baserunners into scoring position. Herm Demmink then struck out to end the game.

Chatham has now falled beneath .500 for the first time in the 2004 season, and will host Hyannis tonight at Veterans field.

Game Recap

Game 10

CHATHAM - The A's lost their third straight game as they were shut out again, this time 2-0 at the hands of the Hyannis Mets at Veterans Field.

Chatham pitching was strong again, with starter Bobby Paschal working in and out of trouble on several occassions. Both Hyannis runs were unearned as they came home as a result of errors. A Matt Camp throwing error allowed the first run to come home, while an errant pick-off attempt sent a baserunner to third, setting up Hyannis' final run.

The A's offense was stagnant, managing only three hits over nine innings. They were victims of some degree of poor luck, but a lack of baserunners spelled the A's demise. The A's have not scored in their last 22 innings.

The loss came on the heels of good news for the organization; the A's were informed that national stars Ryan Mullins and Stephen Head will join the team within a matter of days. The team's manager John Schiffner said he hopes that these new arrivals will cement the starting rotation's dominance, and that Head's bat will provide a much-needed spark to a struggling offense.

Game Recap

Game 11

YARMOUTH- The A's snapped a 22-inning scoreless streak in the top of the first inning, but the Red Sox rallied to defeat Chatham 7-2.

Travis Storrer knocked two runs home in the first, scoring Chris Getz and Matt Camp on an RBI single. Chatham's lead would be short-lived, however, as Y-D would slowly chip away at the lead and steadily build one of their own.

The Red Sox picked up one run in the first, the third, the fourth, the fifth, the sixth and two in the seventh to bury Chatham. Among the seven Y-D runs, three came off of homeruns. Starter Glen Swanson surrendered homers to Frank Curreri and Nick Moresi in the fifth and sixth respectively, and then reliever Chris Cody higave up a two-run shot in the bottom of the seventh to Matt LaPorta.

After scoring twice in the first, Chatham would only deliver one more base hit over the final eight innings of play. They did not lack baserunners, though, stranding 11 during the course of the game.

The A's are mired in a season-high four-game losing streak, and are three games below .500

Game 12

CHATHAM - The A's snapped a four-game skid, beating Brewster 3-1 at Veterans Field.

Chatham broke through with two runs in the second inning when Chris Getz and Robby Jacobson hit back-to-back singles with one out. Getz went to third on the hit and run, and came home on a Zach Dillon Sac Fly. With two down, Johnny Defendis hit an RBI double to right-center, scoring Jacobson before Defendis was thrown out trying to advance to third.

Ryan Roberson's run-scoring double plated the only Brewster run in the fourth. Chatham starter James Avery picked up several important strikeouts and double-play groundballs to escape some trouble over his five innings of work. Relievers David Huff, Will Fenton, and Kyle Bono nailed down the win for the A's, with Bono picking up a save.

Bono's twin brother, Ryan extended the A's lead to two in the sixth with an RBI single through the right side. The Bono twins celebrated their 21st birthday as the A's sailed through the remainder of the ballgame.
